How to Choose a PS5 Stand

A console sitting flat on a shelf takes up more depth than most desks or TV stands have to spare. Standing it upright solves that space problem, but only if the stand underneath actually matches how the console breathes. Buy the wrong one and the console either wobbles on an edge it was never designed to rest on, or sits propped up in a way that blocks the vents it needs most.

A vertical stand has to fit the exact console and leave its vents clear

A PS5 pulls air in along its sides and pushes warm air out the back, so a vertical stand only works well if it holds the console by its base and leaves the back clear. The original PS5, the Slim and the Pro are different sizes, so a stand made for one won’t necessarily hold another securely. Checking a listing for the exact models it supports, rather than assuming “PS5 stand” covers every version, avoids a console that wobbles in a frame built for a bigger or smaller body.

A horizontal stand solves a different problem than a vertical one

Standing the console up saves desk depth, but a horizontal stand solves the opposite problem: fitting a wide, flat footprint into a short shelf or a TV cabinet with limited vertical clearance. A stand built for horizontal use typically adds small feet or a tray rather than changing how the console rests, since the factory base already works for that orientation. Searching only for “vertical stand” when the real constraint is shelf height narrows the results to the wrong half of the category.

A cooling fan helps most when the console already runs warm where it sits

The console ships with internal fans sized for normal use, so an external cooling fan on a stand is a workaround for a cramped shelf or a warm room, not a required upgrade. A stand’s fan speed often needs manual adjustment through a button or switch, which means it keeps running at whatever speed it was last set to instead of reacting to how hot the console actually gets. Weighing that tradeoff against a quieter stand with no fan at all comes down to how enclosed the space around the console already is.

A TicEaik cooling stand shows what a listing that covers both jobs should say. It names separate fitting panels for the original PS5, the Slim and the Pro, a fan with three speed settings, and a dock that charges two DualSense controllers at once with a red-to-blue charging light. The dock draws power over USB-C from the console or a 5V/3A adapter.

A charging dock built into the stand is a convenience add-on, not a cooling feature

Several stands bundle a controller charging dock onto the base, which keeps a controller off the desk and off its own cable when it’s not in use. That dock runs off its own USB connection, separate from whatever is cooling the console, so a stand with a strong fan doesn’t necessarily charge any faster than one without. A few things worth checking before counting on one:

  • Whether it charges one controller or two at once, since a household with multiple controllers needs the dual version
  • Whether the charging connectors are USB-C, since stands made for PS4 controllers use micro-USB, which doesn’t fit a DualSense
  • Whether the dock sits high enough to clear a controller’s thumbsticks without strain on the cable

Desk placement versus a TV stand changes what actually matters

A stand sitting on a desk next to a monitor benefits most from a small footprint and quiet operation, since any fan noise sits a few feet from an ear for hours at a time. A stand sitting inside a TV cabinet has more room to spare but often sits inside a half-closed space with worse airflow than an open desk, which makes vent clearance matter even more than it does on a desk. Deciding where the console lives before buying the stand narrows the choice faster than browsing by cooling fan alone.

Matching the stand’s orientation support to the exact console generation prevents the most common mistake. Cooling fans and charging docks are useful extras once that fit is settled, not reasons to pick a stand on their own.
